Project Scope
Bongolo Hospital, a mission of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Gabon, was founded in 1977. It has grown to 130 beds and serves a regional population of approximately 200,000 people in the two southeastern provinces of Gabon. Since it is the best known hospital in the country, one fourth of its patients come from all over Gabon, including the capital of Libreville. In the last 10 years, more than 12,000 people have prayed to receive Christ at Bongolo Hospital and the hospital has planted 6 churches.
Today the hospital is in need of a well thought-out, well-designed, comprehensive plan of growth that will take them to 2020. Several priorities have been identified by the hospital for consideration, including: what to do with older buildings that are no longer adequate, what to do about the aging water and sewer systems, how to improve parking and roads, where to build needed housing, and how to best maximize the remaining spaces on the hospital campus to include needed outpatient clinics, a larger operating suite, a new emergency department, additional surgical and ophthalmology wards, and laboratory.
EMI will be sending a team to develop a Master Plan in this “reinventing” stage of hospital development. The team will design one building area based on the highest priority in the Master Plan which is anticipated to include one of or both the emergency room and outpatient clinic. The team will need to map the as-built layout and document the conditions of the present on-site buildings, water, wastewater, electrical, and mechanical systems. The existing infrastructure is functioning over capacity and is in need of improved and expanded function.
