| The Nuts and Bolts EMI’s work is predominantly in the fields of civil engineering and architecture, therefore, most of the interns we accept are in related fields. We typically have civil engineers, architects, structural engineers, and mechanical engineers; occasionally, we will have chemical engineers or electrical engineers. The Process The process to become an intern begins with submitting an interest form or simply submitting an application to us. After the submission deadline for the term you are applying has been reached, a phone interview will be conducted for us to understand you better and hear more about why you want to serve with us at EMI! Even you are not positively sure that you would like to serve with us, I would encourage you to complete and application and go through the phone interview, as it also gives you an opportunity to get to know us better. Following the phone interview, correspondence begins with all the of EMI’s offices to determine how the needs of their particular office matches up with the applicants. Approximately 3 weeks after the initial interview, a follow-up call occurs with final decisions. Shortly after this occurs, interns begin writing their support letters and are well on their way towards joining use. Most interns have approximately 3 months to raise their funds! The Costs The cost of an internship varies based on the duration of your internship and location. Every internship has basic components of cost as detailed below: 1. Tuition - Cost of participating in an EMI internship 2. Travel Expenses - Cost of travel to/from overseas office and/or project trip. 3. Room & Board Expenses - Cost of living while serving as an EMI intern The following table shows approximate costs for each office and term which include tuition, travel expenses (including airfare and travel insurance), and Room & Board expenses. Domestic interns cost vary as the Room & Board is not a set expense. These costs may change, during application process the final cost will be indicated. |

*Summer term cost for India, Costa Rica, and Uganda are based on a 4-5 week experience which includes the project trip and a limited time in the specific office. Each intern is responsible to cover his/her costs. All technical staff at EMI raise their own funds. The Director of the Intern Program will help all interns facilitate their own support raising. The costs as outlined above do not include immunizations, passport, visa, travel to and from Colorado. The Arrival All of EMI’s interns start their experience by first coming to Colorado for orientation. During this week, the intern is introduced to the workings of EMI from it’s history to rock climbing from CAD Standards to Biblical teaching. This week is full of fun yet very informative. Unfortunately due to short nature of the summer program, all interns are directed to their respective office and complete training in-country. Following the orientation, all of our interns go to their assigned office where more specific training occurs. All interns will have the opportunity to participate on a project trip. Overseas interns typically serve on a project trip in the same country they are assigned. Domestic interns have the possibility of going to any developing country. The Heart of an Internship Just a small time portion of the internship is spent in orientation and on project trips, the remainder of the time is spent in the assigned office. Interns enable EMI to complete the project work on time, as 60% of project work is completed by interns! Interns have varying responsibilities depending on discipline, education, and experience. All interns gain exposure to AutoCAD and the various design disciplines, as most EMI projects have at least 3 to 4 engineering disciplines represented. Our interns work closely with their assigned project manager and the various volunteers on the project trip. Most interns gain a more complete understanding of projects. Read about a "day in the life" of an EMI intern. Should you Apply? EMI internships are available for any engineering or architecture student that has completed at least their junior year in college. As mentioned, EMI’s work is primarily completed in the discipline of civil engineering and architecture. Those applying of other disciplines are accepted understanding that they may not complete work in their discipline. Also, priority in accepting interns of other engineering disciplines is lower than that of civil engineers, architects, and structural engineers, especially in our overseas offices. Even with this being said, we have several interns per term that are mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, or chemical engineers. They still come away with a valuable experience as long as they have come to EMI with servant hearts and open minds. How to Apply? Simply download an application and email to us.
