Liberia (Bong County)
Phebe Hospital Survey
EMI Project 5448
February 2008
Project Update
EMI travelled to Liberia in February 2008. One of the tasks of the trip was to implement a new electrical design for Phebe Hospital, as the old design was no longer able to support the 125-bed hospital. The other task was to produce a survey of the hospital and compound grounds.
The electrical design was implemented and the powerhouse was rebuilt during the trip. Phebe Hospital will now have consistent and reliable power for its patients and medical staff. The survey will also prove instrumental for the ministry to obtain a deed for their property.

Original Project Scope
Since 1921, Phebe Hospital has provided Christian health care to over 500,000 people in Bong County, Liberia. The hospital currently serves up to 150 outpatients daily and provides care to 125 inpatients daily. Established through the funds of American churches, the hospital has carried out its ministry to the sick and injured thanks to the efforts of both missionaries and Liberian Christians, even through the terrible years of civil war in Liberia.
The 360-acre hospital campus was surveyed in the 1960s by Liberian surveyors. Survey records were lost or destroyed during the Liberian Civil War. A new survey needs to be performed to accurately determine the size, shape, and topography of the property. Locations of existing buildings need to be documented. This work is desperately needed for strategic planning and facilities management. The eMi team will also assist Phebe Hospital with installation of electrical systems improvements and with assessment of the hospital campus wastewater disposal system.
Without Phebe Hospital, half-million or more residents of Bong, Lofa, and Nimba Counties would have to travel over 100 miles to Monrovia to receive hospital care. Most could never afford the transportation costs for trips to the capitol.
