Faith Mediplex Hospital Expansion
EMI Project 5415
[project map]

September 21 - October 2, 2006

Project Update
The EMI team assessed the existing hospital, prepared accurate as-built drawings, conducted a site survey, and investigated the water, wastewater, and electrical utilities. Based on all these systems, the EMI team recommended a master plan to direct the growth of the hospital for the next 10-15 years. The most significant development is a three-story hospital addition that will house a new emergency room, pharmacy, administrative space, pediatrics, and maternity ward, which will allow the ministry to grow, provide better and more targeted health care, and continue to be the flagship hospital for Faith Mediplex. The ground floor of the new addition is almost complete and ready to move into as of November 2007 (see photos below).

Original Project Scope
Faith Mediplex was established in October 1989 under the auspices of the Nigerian denomination, Church of God Mission International (COGM). COGM has several thousand churches covering Nigeria and neighboring African countries. They operate an extensive school system for primary and secondary education, a university, and a bible school in addition to the medical branch of the ministry. The first clinic and hospital were started in Benin City with mobile clinics serving surrounding rural areas. Since then, four hospitals have been established at various locations around the country.

Faith Mediplex/COGM reaches out to the community at the point of their greatest physical need to introduce them to the Great Physician. They have been overwhelmed recently by the increasing need for medical services in Benin City. A new HIV treatment program and increasing patient turnout have overtaxed their current facility.

The existing facility in Benin City is a 3-story hospital complex with an adjacent parking lot. Faith Mediplex has asked eMi to design a 3-story addition to be built over the parking area adjacent to the hospital. This new addition will house an HIV/AIDS treatment program, a specialist clinic, administrative office space, and 50 more beds for the hospital. The HIV treatment program will require counseling rooms, a laboratory, and records storage. Pediatrics, orthopedics, and radiology spaces will form the specialist clinic.

We will be evaluating use of the current hospital to decide what functions to move into the new building. There is also potential to move some administrative functions to an adjacent property owned by the church. Faith Mediplex needs construction drawings soon so they can initiate construction in early 2007 before the rainy season begins.

An entirely defunct municipal water supply and nonexistent municipal sewer necessitate the need for an on-site water supply and wastewater treatment design. Their current water/wastewater facilities are already overtaxed without the proposed addition. Because there are no drawings of the facility, there is also a great need to survey the site and prepare as-built drawings of the existing hospital.
